Sample IELTS Speaking Answer
Well, I am quite good at choosing gifts for my friends and family. In fact, some of my friends even ask for my suggestions when buying gifts. Here, I’d like to talk about a gift I would love to buy for one of my close friends, and that is a smart watch.
I have known this friend since my childhood. We first met when we were in the fifth class at school. Since then, we have spent a lot of time together, playing, studying and learning from each other. Over the years, this friend has become more like a brother or sister to me than just a friend.
When it comes to choosing a gift, I am quite particular. I first think about the person’s personality, lifestyle and interests. I also focus on usefulness because I prefer giving something that is actually used rather than sitting in a cupboard. Of course, I keep my budget in mind and choose something that offers good value for money.
I think a smart watch would be a perfect choice because my friend loves wearing accessories like rings, bracelets and watches. Moreover, since this friend works in an office, it would look stylish and professional.
More importantly, I would choose it because of my friend’s health. As an office-going person, this friend spends around eight or nine hours sitting at work. A smart watch could help track steps, heart rate and sleep, and also remind them to stay active.
If I gave this gift, I’m sure my friend would be over the moon. I would feel really satisfied because it would be both stylish and useful.
IELTS Speaking Part 3: Follow-up Questions
1. Are there any unlucky things that people should not buy as gifts in your country?
Yes, in India, some people are quite superstitious about certain gifts. For example, many believe that giving a handkerchief can bring sadness or tears. Similarly, perfumes are sometimes avoided because people believe that the fragrance fades away and the relationship may fade with it.
2. What do people usually consider when buying gifts?
Well, people usually think about the receiver’s personality, age, interests and needs before choosing a gift. They also consider the occasion, such as a birthday, wedding or festival. Of course, budget is another important factor, and most people try to choose something useful as well as meaningful.
3. Which do people give on traditional festivals, red envelopes or other kinds of gifts?
Well, people usually give different kinds of gifts during traditional festivals. They may give sweets, dry fruits, clothes or other useful items. In many cases, money is also given in envelopes as a blessing, especially to younger family members. I think the type of gift mainly depends on the festival and the relationship between people.
4. Will people feel happy when receiving an expensive gift?
Not always. Some people feel delighted when they receive an expensive gift, especially if it is something they really like or need. However, others may feel a little uncomfortable because they might feel they have to give something equally valuable in return. So, I think the thought behind the gift is more important than its price.
5. Is it difficult to choose a gift?
Yes, it can be quite tricky, especially when the person is not very well known. It becomes much easier when the person's interests and preferences are clear. Otherwise, there is always a risk of buying something that simply goes unused, which is why practical gifts are often a safe choice.
6. When do people normally send gifts to others?
People usually give gifts on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and festivals like Diwali and Christmas. Sometimes, gifts are also given simply to show appreciation or say thank you. For example, a small gift can be a thoughtful way of expressing gratitude to a friend or colleague.
